The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT)’s revised Class 8 Social Science textbook has ignited a discussion regarding the notable omission of Tipu Sultan, Haidar Ali, and the significant Anglo-Mysore Wars. This absence has raised concerns among various groups.

However, the Centre has offered clarification, stating that individual states retain the autonomy to incorporate regionally relevant historical details into their respective curricula. This allows for a more nuanced and comprehensive historical narrative at the state level.

In response to the feedback received on the newly revised textbooks, which are aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, an expert committee has been established. This committee’s primary function is to thoroughly review the content and subsequently suggest modifications to achieve a balanced representation of both national and regional historical perspectives. The outcome of their review will be crucial in shaping the future of history education in India.
