Bengaluru Stadium Deemed Unsafe After Deadly Stampede: Report Blames Design and Organizers

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the home of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) IPL team, has been declared unsuitable for large-scale events following a devastating stampede during recent victory celebrations. The incident resulted in 11 fatalities.

A comprehensive report, issued by the Michael Cunha Commission, points a critical finger at the stadium’s design, citing significant flaws that contributed to the tragic loss of life. The report doesn’t stop at infrastructure concerns; it also holds the RCB franchise, DNA Entertainment (the event organizer), and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) accountable for their roles in the incident.

The commission’s findings highlight a systemic failure, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures and a thorough review of event management protocols at large venues across the city. The details of the report are expected to trigger significant changes in how large gatherings are managed and regulated in Bengaluru moving forward.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing public safety at all large-scale events and the crucial need for comprehensive risk assessments and robust emergency plans.
